Featuring Juicing and The Bliss Bar

We have some great news to share with our readers, on Wednesday May 16, 2012 from 3-7pm we will be hosting Goodwin’s Market Night! This is the perfect opportunity for our customers to sample the best of what Goodwin’s has to offer. Market Nights will take place on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month. This Wednesday we will be featuring the Green Star Juicer! Juicing with the Green Star Juicer is unlike any other juicing experience. This juicier has a unique press system that separates pure juice from harmful pesticides and heavy metals which might be present in the fruits and vegetables you consume.

Juicing is an easy way to provide your body with beneficial enzymes, which are primarily found in raw foods. Furthermore, the antioxidants and other immune enhancing properties found in fruits and vegetables are concentrated in juices and are more readily absorbed since the fibrous part of the plant has been separated out. Come and join us to gain more knowledge on the benefits of juicing, to sample tasty juices and to receive juicing recipes that you can try at home!

The new Bliss Bars will also be sampled on Wednesday May 16, 2012! These are superfood energy bars that are packed with the antioxidants you need on a daily basis. We hope to see you there!

Calling All Moms!

Since the day that you became a mom you have played a key role in providing nutrients to your children. You play such a big role in the lives of your little ones that there is a day dedicated to celebrating YOU! Mother’s Day!

There is no doubt that you want to provide the best for your family!  We have heard it said, “You are what you eat.” In America what we eat has changed over the decades and as a result the average American has changed too. Chronic diseases (including various types of cancers) have been on the rise in the United States, and as we look at the root of the problem, we can see that the food one eats plays a large part in health, wellness and the development of disease.

Where does our food come from?

In the past, local farms used to supply America with food; now small farms have been replaced with mass food production and feed lots. In order to get the most bang for their buck chemical fertilizers and pesticides are used during the cultivation and harvesting of plant foods. The problem is that getting rid of these chemicals is not as simple as just rinsing off your fruits and vegetables! As a result of current food production practices, the very cells that make up fruits and vegetables are saturated with chemicals that do not come off by washing with water. The situation does not look any more promising when we look at how animals are raised on the average feedlot. As a result of the unsanitary conditions, animals are injected with antibiotics, which can lead to antibiotic resistance in humans. The consequences of mass food production can even been seen even in a newborn baby who, on average, will have over 300 toxins in his or her umbilical cord blood!

So what is the solution?

Just go ORGANIC!

But Where Do I Get My Protein Part III

As we have been talking about protein sources, we have discovered that chronic disease is seen most often in those who obtain their protein from animal flesh and other animal products. On the other hand, Walter Willett, the Chair of the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health, has shared that a diet high in fruits and vegetables is a key factor in reducing your risk of developing chronic disease. In fact, the American Cancer Society has made the following recommendations, which are essential for preventing cancer through diet:

1. Eat more plant-based foods

2. Eat fewer animal-based foods

Thinking about these recommendations, you may wonder how you are supposed to meet your daily protein requirements if you omit animal flesh from your diet. Well, the first thing to consider is how much protein you really need. Currently, the average American is consuming protein in amounts that are well above their daily protein requirement. In addition to the protein you consume, your body reuses and recycles body proteins which contribute over 70% of your daily protein needs. As stated in a previous post, your protein needs CAN be met through a well-planned plant-based diet. Eating a variety of plant based foods will ensure that you get more than enough protein. Having a chart of plant protein sources will help you create healthy dishes that will meet your protein needs.  For bonus pleasure reading, you can check out Young and Pellett, Plant proteins in human nutrition where scientists conclude that “a mixture of plant proteins are fully adequate to meet human requirements.”

But Where Do I Get My Protein? Part II

Is there such thing as “Just a little”? In continuing our discussion, many people wonder: will eating “just a little” animal flesh and dairy really be harmful in the long run? According to T. Collin Campbell, Ph.D., author of the book The China Study, “even small intakes of animal foods- meat, eggs, and milk….are associated with significant increases of chronic degenerative diseases.” Dr. Campbell’s research shows a distinct difference in the development of chronic disease between those who eat the most animal-based foods verses those who ate the most plant-based foods. Higher rates of chronic disease such as heart disease, prostate, colon, and breast cancer were found in those who ate more animal-based food products.

So what really is the problem with getting our protein from animal flesh?

The breakdown and digestion of animal flesh requires a great amount of energy. However even after all the work of digestion and breakdown, some animal flesh will remain in the gut where it will decompose and produce acidic poisons that lead to toxic build-up. These acids, which include nitric, sulphuric, uric, phosphoric, and lactic acid, destroy human health and can lead to CANCER!

Other harmful materials found in animal flesh and dairy products include antibiotics, growth hormones, fertilizers, tranquilizers, and other medications that are used in rearing animals for food production. Similar to the idea that what goes up must come down, what goes into an animal will come out, end up on your plate, and end up in your body. Therefore, the pH Miracle Lifestyle and Diet stands behind the research that shows that an increase in chronic disease risk cannot be avoided when you eat animal flesh and dairy products.

Well, if animal flesh and diary is not a wise option, can you meet your protein needs on a plant based diet? Find out tomorrow!
